SEA DRAGON
Endangered
Sea Horses live in shallow warm temperate and tropical seas around
the world, the "weedy" and "leafy" Sea Dragon being the most bizarre
with fleshy leaf-like appendages simulating seaweed or coral. These
small highly specialised marine fish produce magnificently intense
colours such as bright red and deep purple for camouflage and for
expressing emotions. Care of the young is by the male who carries
bright pink eggs in a brood patch on the abdomen where they are
fertilised and nursed. Inshore areas of seagrass are under increasing
threat from pollution and excessive fertiliser run-off. Sea Horses
have long excited interest as dried specimens for use as talismans
and are harvested for their alleged medicinal properties, they are
now endangered.
The 'Fantasea Collection' wildlife design portrays
the beauty of the mystical & enigmatic Sea Dragons while creating an awareness
that all members of the sea horse family are endangered.
