MACAW
macaw

The giants of the parrot world that live in the tropical lowland forests of South America in the Peruvian Amazon. Parrots are among the most intelligent birds and can learn to solve fairly complex problems. The Blue Macaw is the world’s largest parrot, growing up to 100 centimetres and living up to 50 years. Macaws have long pointed tails and hugh bills with the most powerful bites in the bird world. Exotically coloured birds with lines of face feathers that are unique like fingerprints. Strong four clawed toes enable them to grasp fruits and nuts, climb, and hang acrobatically from tree branches. Very loving, noisy, solicable birds that talk constantly although when Macaws fly into the dense rainforest canopy to search for food, they become invisible and almost silent. Dazzling wildlife gatherings occur where parrots gather to eat riverland clay to detoxify themselves. Macaws mate for life and nest in cosy tree cavities a hundred feet or more off the ground, both sexes feed their offspring. Many parrots are in danger of extinction, largely because people have destroyed much of their habitat. Acute housing shortage contributes to the Macaw’s low reproductive rate. Some dealers on the pet trade sell illegally captured wild parrots at high prices.

The 'Paradisia Collection' wildlife design portrays the beauty of the personable, curious and rambunctious Macaws of South America.
